The busy 5-million-pop. City, the second largest in the country, combines the advantages and disadvantages of an industrial metropolis with a rich cultural heritage. From the central plaza you can visit enormous palaces and richly decorated churches within walking distance. Through careful planning, large parts of the center since the early eighties have been converted into pedestrian zones.
Instituto Cultural Cabañas In the splendid surroundings of the former orphanage (1805) with 23 courtyards today are the works of José Clemente Orozco, the great Mexican painter issued, including the world famous "man in flames." Plazas The cathedral is surrounded by four beautiful plazas. On the side of the portal is the Plaza de los Laurel, the place of the Indian laurel trees (also: Plaza Guadalajara). The dense crowns of deep green shade trees give shadow for the many young people who meet here. Between Cathedral and the Palacio de Gobierno, is the Plaza de Armas with a victorian-round stage. Finally, behind the cathedral, the Plaza de la Liberación with colonial fountains and a statue of Hidalgo is situated. This place is Plaza de los Tres Poderes named because of his government buildings, the house of the legislature and the Palace of Justice.

Lake Chapala Approximately 60 km southeast of Guadalajara, the Laguna de Chapala, the largest lake in the country dries on the east and south.
