HAMBURG

The people in Hamburg are unfriendly and care only about business, many people say. But they can be different... A lot of nonsense has been told about Hamburg in its history. For example it is not true that Hamburg is situated at the sea. Until the North Sea are still missing more than 100 km. It is also not true that it rains in Hamburg without stopping. In Munich falls even more water per square meter and per year from the sky than here. Hamburg offers little superlatives, and they are still little Sensational: the second largest city of the Republic, the second largest cemetery in the world. The city of bridges (exactly 2496) and the millionaires (whose numbers do not even know the finance authority). What really makes Hamburg, is a certain feeling of life. Some people feel it immediately, some never, this blend of the world and patriotism. "Gateway to the World" called the Hanseatic city itself proud. Everyone has heard of St. Pauli and the Reeperbahn. Going up to the Michel, feeding the gulls and returning home with the feeling that you saw most of all. This is also a mistake. Not even the hamburgers exactly know their city. Without its port Hamburg would be only a city of many. 11000 ships clear per year here or take their cargo goods, and ship it into 325 different ports around the world. The entire port area covers 74.4 km ² today, including the areas of water. 126 million tons were handled here in 2005, about half of them in containers. Despite all the rationalizations the port of Hamburg is still one of the largest employers: Over 100.000 people live directly or indirectly from business with the ships.

Michaeliskirche
Commonly called "Michel". Although the youngest among Hamburg's five main churches, is its tower, 132 m high "Michel", the landmark of the city. Fischmarkt
A must for every Hamburg tourist. Every Sunday morning (from 5 in the summer, in winter from 7 clock) until half past nine (but the right time for bargains is then over). Rathaus
The town hall is built on about 4000 piles, in the Alster march because the ground of the 70 m wide and 111 m long construction would not bear it. Even from outside the construction looks magnificently, from inside it definitely is. Absolutely worth a visit. On the left corner of the building is the entrance to Ratsweinkeller with home-style cooking. City Hall visits 10am-3pm Mon to Thu, Fri, Sat, Sun 10am-1pm, half-hourly tours, entrance 2 Euro. Alter Elbtunnel
Was at its opening 1911 a technical marvel and is still in operation. People are free, cars are transported for a fee with the elevator down and cross the Elbe to Steinwerder. From there, fantastic view of the harbor and Landungsbruecken. on foot, cyclists, skaters around the clock, Cars Mon-Fri 5.30am-8pm S 1 und 3, U 3, Landungsbruecken

shopping Hamburg has designer stores aplenty, most along Jungfernstieg, Grosse Bleichen and Neuer Wall. The city’s nine shopping arcades include the glass-topped Sillem’s Bazaar (off the Jungfernstieg), and Hanse-Viertel, Kaufmannshaus and Hamburger Hof (off Grosse Bleichen).
