Kaunas is one of the largest cities of Lithuania and the Baltic ever. Kaunas has several universities and has become a business location. In Kaunas are also goods and services often sold for Lithuanian prices, while the amounts in the capital have western European levels.
Senamiestis (old town) The town lies on a headland at the confluence of the Neris and Nemunas (Memel). On the banks of the Neris River lie the ruins of the Kaunas Castle (Kauno pilis). The original gothic town hall (ROTUS on the ROTUSE Square), "white swan" called mixes baroque and classical elements and looks like a church. The huge Cathedral of Kaunas, St. Peter and Paul (Sv. Petro ir Povilo arkikatedra), isn north-east of the town hall square. It is the largest gothic building in Lithuania. One of the oldest religious buildings ever is the gothic church Vytautas (Vytauto baznycia, Aleksoto 3).

Zaliakalnis From Green Hills you have a great view of the entire old city of Kaunas. You can walk or take the funicular (furnieculierius). Station at the Marveles-Street.

shopping The straight pedestrian zone with numerous shops, liberty avenue (Laisves aleja), leads to 1.7 km from the powerful former russian garrison church in old town. The big department store Merkurijus is located in number 60.

Kaunas Sea and Monastery Pazaislis The "sea" (Kauno juros) is a reservoir, created by a 1954-built hydroelectric powerstation and dam at the Nemunas. On its shores lies the monastery PAZAISLIS.
