KIEL

Kiel is (244 000 pop.) metropolis of Schleswig-Holstein. The port is the hub for trade with the entire Nordic region and bridge in the Baltic Countries. Kiel is a location for industry, City of shipbuilding and the Navy. Colorful sailors belong to the daily picture. Ferries run to Norway, Denmark, Russia and the Baltic countries. Cruise ships from all over the world stop at the quays - and everything in the middle of the city and right in front of your eyes. Children have fun at the outdoor seal pool of the aquarium.

Rathaus
The sprawling plant, built in Art Nouveau is overlooked by the 106 m high tower of the City Hall. It is the symbol of Kiel. You have a nice view from the observation gallery.

St.-Nikolai-Kirche
Next to the main entrance of the church on the Old Market (destroyed during the war, 1950 rebuilt) you can find the sculpture "The Spirit fighters."

Schleusenanlagen
A tour of the facilities of the Nord-Ostsee Canal in Kiel-Holtenau you should not miss. daily 9am, 11am, 1pm and 3pm, entrance 2,30 Euro.

shopping:
Largest Shopping Center with level is the glass-roofed Sophienhof. Dozens of retailers sale on two levels everything your heart desires. Moreover, there are many restaurants and cafes. Popular shopping area are also the Holtenauer Arkaden in the Holtenauer Strasse. The pedestrian zones Holsten-, Schloss- and Daenische Strasse offer a wealth of shops and department stores.

Trains
ICE-connections over Hamburg. Bus From Hamburg ZOB buses drive to several destinations in Schleswig-Holstein. Flugzeug The next major international airport is Hamburg Fuhlsbuettel. From there, buses run regularly to Kiel. From the airport Luebeck are also targets in other European countries served.

SCHLESWIG
From far away the visitor recognizes the high, slender tower of the cathedral in Schleswig. As a symbol it dominates the skyline of Schleswig-Holstein's oldest city. which was 804 first mentioned in the succession of Haithabu an important trading center. Because of its scenic location, the numerous historic buildings and museums is Schleswig (25 000 pop.) a worthwhile destination.

Holm
A unique piece of Schleswig is the old fishing village on the Holm. The picturesque neighborhood, with its flower stores has retained very original.

St.-Petri-Dom
The history of the three-gothic hall church goes back to the 11th Century.

Wikinger Museum Haithabu

The excellent museum is dedicated to the archeology and history of Viking settlement Haithabu. In the Ship Hall, a 1979 salvaged warship is shown. Outside are replicas of Viking houses at historic spots built. April-Oct. 9am-5pm daily, Nov.-March Tue-Sun 10am-4pm. entrance 4 Euro.
