NAPOLI

A little palpitation everyone has before the visit of the city: If you find your way in the chaos? If you still have your handbag and a camera in the evening? About chaos and seediness, it just makes the attraction of Napoli. Napoli, the capital of the Campania region, is the third largest city in Italy. Ten times more populated than Florence, counts 1 million inhabitants. In the thick mesh you can find 300 churches, countless palaces, castles, monasteries. The Funiculars help you to get in the higher-lying neighborhoods. On the sea lies the district of Santa Lucia; from the shore road Via Nazario Sauro and Via Partenope you see the luxurious hotels.

Castel dell'Ovo/ Borgo Marinari
A mythical place on an island in front of the city (Mon to Sat 8.30am-6pm, Sun 8.30am-2pm). The access to the castle - now lavishly restored and convention center - is via a small bridge.

Castel Sant'Elmo
From the third fort, a star fort from the time of Anjou on the eastern rim of the Vomeroplateau, you have a wonderful view over the Gulf. In front of the castel is the great Carthusian monastary Certosa di San Martino (today museum) Thu-Tue 9am-6.30pm Via Tito Angelini

Duomo San Gennaro
Inside the rich over the centuries equipped Cathedral (early 14th century) guard a magnificent baroque chapel of the blood remnants of the city's patron San Gennaro, which is published twice a year, in May and September, when it gets wondrous as liquid. Via Duomo

Catacombe
Behind the Basilica della Madre del Buon Consiglio on the way up to Capodimonte you can go down into the frescoed underground cemetery of the first Christians, the Catacombe di San Gennaro (Tue-Sun 9am, 10am, 11am, 12pm, Tondo Capodimonte).

Napoli Sotterranea
"Napoli Sotterranea" stands on a small sign in the Via Tribunali. Here you climb down into the underworld of Napoli, a labyrinth of tunnels, cisterns, storage cellars, sewage galleries, caves you will fascinate you; already the Greeks and Romans built these tunels in the Lavatuff under the city. Piazza del Plebiscito/ Palazzo Reale
At the grand neoclassical Piazza del Plebiscito, in the 19th Century deployment and festival place, today strolling, playing and concert place, is the great royal palace, the Palazzo Reale. (Thu-Tue 9am-7pm). On the other side impresses the Pantheon-like domed church San Francesco di Paola (19. Jh.).

Posillipo and Marechiaro
At Naples Bay along to the southwest you can get up to the traditional uptown Posillipo: retreat of the wealthy bourgeoisie, the new rich and the old aristocratic families, who left their palaces in the chaotic city long ago. The villas are located in cursed gardens on the slopes of Mount Posillipo down to the sea. San Domenico Maggiore Due to earthquakes and fires is nearly nothing from the original Gothic building remained. Its one of the most impotant curches of Napoli and keeps some king graves. San Gregorio Armeno

Santa Maria del Carmine

Teatro San Carlo

A medieval tradition, which until today is common in the centro storico of Napoli, are road trains, on a particular craft, which are specialiized on a category of products. Bookstores and book stalls can be found at the Piazza Dante and Via San Biagio dei Librai. Many jewelers and goldsmiths reside in Piazza Orefici and its side streets. A tourist highlight not just for Christmas are the shops and workshops who make cribes in the Via San Gregorio Armeno. The very noble fashion stores (all) spread across the Via Chiaia, Via dei Mille, Via Calabritto, Piazza dei Martiri in Chiaia-San Ferdinando. Fine chocolate patisserie offers Gay Odin (Via Chiaia 237).

The tradition of cafe is Gambrinus (Piazza Trento e Trieste,); very chic is the La Gran Caffè Caffettiera on the beautiful Piazza dei Martiri in Chiaia. Napolis most famous pastry shops are Scaturchio (Piazza San Domenico Maggiore) and Pintauro (Via Toledo 275). Young people meet up late at the ice pavilion on the shores of Mergellina.

Trains
Napoli has three stations, Centrale, Mergellina and Campi Flegrei(Fuorigrotta. Hourly connections to Rome and Salerno. From Napli and Salerno trains go to the coast of Cilento.

Plane
From the airport you can go to central station in the city by bus 3S (every 10 minutes) to the ferry port Beverello Molo with the blue Alibus.

Public Transport
In Napoli good bus network, subway, four Funiculars. Tickets for city buses in tobacco shops and newsagents. Intercity buses to Caserta, Amalfi, Pompeii, Sorrento, Paestum, Salerno. Several times a day ferries (ferryboat) to Capri, Ischia, Procida, Sorrento from the docks Molo Beverello and Mergellina.
