VILNIUS

The lithuanian capital is situated in the middle of gentle hills and is a jewel of the baroque, whose houses and numerous churches are painted in pastel colors. Vilnius has an extensive old town. Through the oldest part, the lively Pilies Gatve goes through. The university is one of the oldest and largest in Europe.

Castle Mountain (Gedimino kalnas) From the still standing Gediminas Tower (Gedimino bokstas) of the upper castle you have a beautiful view of the city. Tue-Sun 11am-5pm. Arsenalo 5.

Gothic Ensemble (Sv. Onos ir Bernadinu baznycia) The late gothic St. Anne's Church (Sv. onos baznycia) continues with its richly ornate brick facade.

Cathedralsquare (Arkikatedros aikste) The free-standing bell tower (VarpinÄ—) in front of the cathedral is a popular meeting place. Katedros 1

Synagoge (Sinagoga) From the ruins rebuilt, it is the only remaining Jewish house of God of once 96. Pylimo 39

Gate of the sunrise (Ausros Vartai) The gate is the only remaining city gate dating from the 16th century and the chapel on the archway is a place of pilgrimage for many Catholics. It is a famous portrait of St. Mary to see. Ausros vartu University (Universitetas) The university, in the old town core, was founded in 1579 and led by the Jesuits. It stretches over 12 courtyards. Plane You canreach Vilnius with many national carriers like airfrance or lufthansa.              

Trakai The town (6200 pop.) was once the capital of the lithuanian empire. Picturesque located, surrounded by four interconnected lakes, it is now a very popular destination (30 km from Vilnius), especially for water sports and historic interests. The large gothic fortress island (Tue-Sun 10am-6pm) is particularly worth seeing.
