The lithuanian capital is situated in the middle of gentle hills and is a jewel of the baroque, whose houses and numerous churches are painted in pastel colors. Vilnius has an extensive old town. Through the oldest part, the lively Pilies Gatve goes through. The university is one of the oldest and largest in Europe.

Gate of the sunrise (Ausros Vartai) The gate is the only remaining city gate dating from the 16th century and the chapel on the archway is a place of pilgrimage for many Catholics. Trakai The town (6200 pop.) was once the capital of the lithuanian empire. Picturesque located, surrounded by four interconnected lakes, it is now a very popular destination (30 km from Vilnius), especially for water sports and historic interests. The large gothic fortress island (Tue-Sun 10am-6pm) is particularly worth seeing.
