WEIMAR

The history of Weimar belongs to Goethe and Schiller and other big names, like Martin Luther. Weimar (64 000 pop.) was in 1999, during the 250th Anniversary of Goethe, European city of culture. Numerous memorials can be found in the space of the city.

Deutsches Nationaltheater Here met in 1919 the National Assembly of the first german republic, which made the first democratic constitution. In front of the theater, the well-known Goethe and Schiller monument is situated.

Gedenkstätte Buchenwald The memorial recalls more than 250 000 people, who were from 1937 to 1945 in the camp on the Ettersberg (about 8 km north of the city center) prisoned. The visit of the Memorial and the exhibitions is free. April-Oct. Tue-Sun 10am-6pm, Nov.-March to 4pm

Herzogin-Anna-Amalia-Bibliothek Around 50 000 books and manuscripts were in the tragic fire in autumn 2004 in the historic library destroyed. Reopening in 2008.

Historischer Friedhof Almost all the classical people of Weimar who had rank and name found their final resting place on this cemetery. In the prince tomb rest Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Friedrich von Schiller. March-Sept. daily 8am to 9pm, Oct.-Feb. to 6pm

Train IC connection to Erfurt, Weimar and Eisenach from Halle and Berlin and from Frankfurt / Main. From the southwest you should use the Nachtreisezug the modern "Semper" City Night Line. From Zurich with stops in Basel, Freiburg, Offenburg, Karlsruhe, Mannheim and Frankfurt it takes you to Erfurt and Weimar. 

Plane To the airport of Erfurt (the closest to Weimar) are connections from several german cities.
